Is it ok to let a site get off topic?

I like the Foo category here on webmasterworld. The fact it exists tells me it SHOULD be ok for my widgets site to have a foo category too. But is that a dangerous proposition?

Concerns
- An off topic post becomes wildly popular, links leading to the site have the wrong anchor texts and the site becomes known in non-widget circles. Too much of a good thing?

- Dilution of core topic. Even Google webmaster tools monitors what a site is about and returns those top keywords. By having a widet-free-foo section does the site rank a little lower for key terms?

Any thoughts appreciated.

My philosophy is when in doubt to keep it simple and don't do anything that might confuse googlebot.

Of course the worst case scenario of adding a Foo section and having it become so popular that it impacts your anchor text is not really a terrible scenario. If that happens it means you probably doubled your traffic and backlinks at the expense of having a perfectly themed site. That doesn't sound like a bad trade.
