I used to be able to "sort of" control instant in Firefox however today it seems to have gone into permanent mode...anyone else seeing this?
In Opera without cookies I'm still ok, at the moment.
Google's doing a darned good job of annoying me right now, much more messing about and we'll be having a very quick divorce!

Checked for both Google.com and Google.co.in. The 'Turn Instant off' link appears to have disappeared on both of them.

It's permanent, because it has increased their earnings. Er, the 'user experience.'
JP Morgan, IIRC, commented on this specifically.

You can still turn it on or off in search settings. It's been there for quite a while.

So... how many average users will do this?
Rethink your sites because Instant is how G will serve it to the masses without a clue.
Sadly, even those with a clue won't figure out how to defeat this "enhancement".
As the web becomes "walmart" and originality is punished, the lowest common denominator will excel.
I conducted an experiment this last year with 100 clients (I still do private and company IT) by arbitrarily changing their default search to Bing when I worked on their systems. One percent noticed and requested it changed back. Five percent applauded and showed same in increased biz (and bucks). Seventy percent (69.8) asked how I made the web work better, with thanks. The remaining said nothing.
Google is in the catbird seat at the moment. Those of us who know what that means will do what they can to either work with it, around it, or defeat it. I am reminded of that old saying: A journey begins with changing one User's Default Search Engine at at time.
Instant Search was the straw that broke my camel's back...

Turn off Javascript - all good browsers (ie Firefox + NoScript) do that by default. :)
