Google Webmaster Tools geographic target setting

Hi,

I am new to Google webmaster, only signed up for my new site.

Anyway I see it has Geographic target and you can pick a country, if I was to pick UK, would I be dropped out google.com, or would I say but not rank high?

Also if I was to pick UK would I be put in google.co.uk or would I be put in google.co.uk UK pages links, or should it be both?

Forgot to say and I can't seem to edit my post to add it.

The site is on a server in the UK with a UK IP address (at the moment), my domain is a .co

The site is a dating site.
I am wanting to target the UK first, then Europe, then USA

Google will certainly not drop your you site from any indexes.

I guess they will boost your ranking for UK users, but by how much (if any) remains a mystery (to me at least).

There was an issue a while ago where an ex-employee with access to webmaster tools went in and maliciously set the country targeting to Tuvalu. The rankings in other countries certainly dropped at that time. The web site lost a lot of traffic.
