We are planning to launch a new feature as a sub domain, we've been working on this for almost an year. Finally decided to launch in March, but Google had different plans. They changed their algo, we are almost 40% down. We don't use extensive ads, no text ads, only issue is we have several tag pages(not wordpress, we've our own software). I am pretty sure it is false positive. I already blocked these pages in robots.txt. Its been 10 days, I did not see any change.

Now, we are not sure whether to launch this new feature on a sub domain or use some other domain name and start from scratch. I heard from some folks that some sub domains are not impacted with this update. I really appreciate if you have any help/suggestions on this issue.
Thanks

It's early to say for sure - but my gut sense is that any influence between top level domains and subdomains would be minimal. If your new content is good, it might even help the parent a little.

Thanks tedster, do you think Google treats subdomain and main domain differently? in other words does Google treat subdomain as a separate entity?

One of my sites that was lowered in ranking after Panda didn't have the subdomains affected.. in fact, one subdomain gained about 10% traffic.

Thanks apuato. Was the drop noticeable? or just 10%. Trying understand the pattern here, looks like G is treating subdomain differently.

Just a little bit - and it isn't black and white at all, it varies with the specific situation.
