Don't Take Google Results Personally

I've been reading quite a bit in the update threads where people seem to be thinking their site is 'not quality' or 'bad' based on Google's results, so I wanted to share for a minute.

Here are some numbers from a 'very new' site for the last 3 days.

Google referrals: 0
(I mean all Google.Etx's.)

Other referrals: 330+

If I looked at the Google visits I could think the site is not quality or was a bad idea, but if that was the case it wouldn't get 100+ visits a day from a single other source.

Yes, I mean one other source is sending 100+ visitors per day when Google sends 0. There is another source of visits sending 20 or so a day and a few others with 'here and there' clicks. The site is 'brand new' and can only be found a few places. (Meaning less than 10 places I know of.)

It's not the site that's incorrect or a bad idea, Google's edits, display, and changes to the presentation are the issue.

With the clicks it's getting from other sources it's fairly obvious people are at least curious about it, because everywhere else I know of it being listed it's described and titles, so people know what they're visiting before they click.

Google is the only place it's listed that doesn't just use the information they are given for a title and description. It's also the only listing I know of not generating a single click.

Anyway, if you're not ranking in Google or not getting the visits you're used to, don't take it personally, because Google's changes, edits and 'thinking for everyone' ideas actually seem to be the problem from my perspective.

If you're visits and/or rankings are down, my advice is to take the time you would spend 'adjusting your site for Google' and finding another way to drive traffic to your website, because believe it or not, they're out there and it might turn out when you're done you have a more solid business...

I should add:
The site ranks in the top 10 of Google's results for more than one set of terms.

The source sending the visits displays essentially the same title as is on the site ... Google changes it. (It's brand name only; go figure on the 'longer more descriptive titles being better for clicks' theory.)

The source sending the visits displays the screen shot of the site as it is displayed when visitors land ... Google changes it.

The title + site look and feel are (obviously to me) not the problem with the site getting clicks from Google ... Google is the problem with the site getting clicks from Google.

I could let it discourage me or I could just find other traffic...
I'm going with the 'get other traffic' method, because it can be (is being) done.

Solid advice and a good read.

Whilst I haven't been hit by the Google changes (be it the farmer update or them changing the titles and descriptions), I do agree that if you have lost traffic from the Big G it isn't necessarily down to a site being bad or unhelpful to visitors.
