Here is what I did :

I had an internal page of my website that had 2 external links ( One on a PR 4 and one N/A which was a / links page ) ( no internal link ) and was ranking on the 1 st page of google a specific keyword.

what I did is ask for the links to be removed ( which they were ) and instead of linking to my internal page have the links to my homepage.

Here is what occurred :
My homepage bumped from the 20 th page of google to the 1 st page for a few days and is currently in the 3 rd page of google...

However my internal page moved up 1 spot in the ranking of the 1 st page of google... and this is where I don't understand what is going on ? This page doesn't have any more links ( it is not a competitive keyword but still... ) and it is ranking higher than when it used to have links...

so what I am wondering if the link on the / link page was penalizing me ?
I think that overall I understand how to rank a webpage in the first 20 results of google ( I know it is not good enough ) but what I am trying to figure out is what is missing to get from 8 th position to 1 st.

It's hard to give a definite answer, but it does raise the kind of questions you are asking. Is there some reason you suspect the page that is linking to you to be poor quality? Even so, links from other sites would not normally cause the target of the link a penalty - otherwise many people would be bowling their competition out of the SERPs.
