'PHP fsyr' is apparently a well searched term when looking at G's term suggestion tool for 'PHP'. 'fsyr' is apparently a type for 'date' which seems fairly obvious from a qwerty keyboard layout.

However, when you search for it, there's no warning that you've been 'auto-corrected' and Google shows results for 'php date'.

The closest you get to the correction is a blurb at the bottom of the SERPs rather than the top:

http://www.google.com/search?q=php+fsyr

Tip: These results include the word "date". Show results that include only "fsyr".

Is this quite common? I've been used to Google showing corrections at the top of the page whenever it thinks I've mistyped something.

Google may not classify this as a "mistyped" query. The results may have included the word "date" as a "synonym" for "fsyr".

I'd say aristotle is on to something. Using the tilde operator for a search [~fsyr] I see that "date" is in bold for the results.

Another possible factor is that Google sees extremely high statistical certainty about the user intention.

Indeed. I just hadn't noticed this before and figured it was worth mentioning; it's a step further than re-directing typo's.

No doubt the statistics in this instance are stacked in the favour of fsyr always meaning date in this query.

And I'm glad you pointed it out, too. It's certainly not common, in my experience.

But, it is highly annoying when you do type exactly what you want and Google shows a SERP for something else, with a link to click if you want what you actually typed.
