Let say my website talks about "green widget". However I have subpages that talk about " green widget" but in different countries. I have one subpage that talks about a "green widget in the United States", one about "green widget in India" etc...

I noticed that some website instead of ranking their subpages for the keywords ( above ) do manage to rank their homepage for all the keywords above ? In other words when I type green widgets in india or United States I have their homepage that appears in the rankings instead of their subpages.

I was wondering if anyone could explain me how they do that ?

It's a Google mystery - and it doesn't always work out the way you may be seeing it today. Until quite recently, the home page often ranked in almost every case. Then last fall Google changed their algorithm and more internal pages started ranking - but not in every case.

I don't know that there is anything particular you can do to lock in your preferred page. Just take the regular steps that you would take to optimize for any keyword phrase.
