Webmaster Tools: Avg position by combination of page AND term

In Webmaster Tools, I can see the avg position for specific page or for a specific term. On the terms report, i can also expand each tm to see the pages that rank for that term and the impressions/clicks for each page. But i cannot see the rank for that page when displayed in SERPs for that particular term. This seems to me like a rather important bit of data.

Is there a way to see that data?

Is that data less important that i think? Ie. Can I get the same conclusions by looking at different data?

Thx!

If you click a term, it expands to show the distribution of ranks over all searches. The rank varies depending on factors such as when and where the search was done. So sometimes the page will rank 2nd, sometimes 3rd, sometimes 4th, etc. So it shows the distribution.

When I click on a term, I get a report with Impressions|Change, Clicks|Change and CTR|Change, for each page. It also shows me another report, "Position in search results", which I believe you're alluding to, which shows the distribution of position of ANY page for that search term.

But it doesn't give me the avg position for a particular page. So in my case, my 2 top pages for the term "blue widget" get the same amount of impressions, but I cannot tell if one ranks higher than the other.

I guess I can ASSUME that if they're getting the same number of impressions/clicks, then they rank equally, but I cannot be sure.

I'm not sure I understand your question. Let me ask what you see in the results when you do a Google search for your term ["blue widgets"]. Does your site have two different pages that rank near each other, or are paired together in the results?

Also, another question - Is one page bringing most of the Google traffic to your site, or are both pages bringing in about the same amount of traffic?

It depends. I have 2 pages (homepage and a secondary keyword-specific page) that alternate. I only see one or the other, not both at the same time. Sometimes they in the top spot, sometimes in #4. My homepage ranks high for several keywords. So knowing the avg position of the homepage across all searches is great, but it wont help me measure improvements for that particular keyword. What i want to know is, how my homepage ranks for a particular keyword. Looking at the SERPs is unreliable now.

Both pages bring in about the same traffic, yes

Correction: both pages bring in about the same amount of traffic FOR THAT KEYWORD ( not yelling... Just not sure how to bold)

It seems unusual that the two pages alternate in the rankings. Now I can understand your problem. But I think you can still get some useful information.

When you click a search term in the Webmaster Tools list, at the top it shows the impressions, clicks and CTR for each page separately. Then under that it appears to show the combined information for both pages.

You should analyze the information at the top, especially the impressions and CTRs that are shown for each page separately. That should tell you quite a bit about how each page is performing.

Thanks aristotle. I'll do that.
