Hello,

Could someone tell me how google link paterns work ? because for my website most of the links that are created are created by website owners that use my website domain name and a few months ago I changed my title and now everyone is creating links with my new title instead of domain name and google has bumped me back in the rankings...

From what I understand google likes variety ( but when you go from one " extreme to another " ( saying having a 100 links with "blue widget" and then a 100 links with "green widgets he doesn't seem to like that because he thinks it is unatural...

So what to do see that I don't control any of those links, should I wait for more links and over the courses a few months my ranking is going to come back in better position that it was ? or any other advice...

Thank you,

goodroi

hi member22,

google likes to see many quality signals when they look at the backlinks for a url. here are some factors in no particular order of importance.

-variety of links from different ip addresses
-variety of anchor text
-links from high quality websites
-links gained gradually over time
-backlinks to the domain
-links with & without nofollow tag
-age of the links
-link placement (in content vs ros footer)
-links from external sites vs internal pages

basically you want to make your links look as natural as possible. you want to avoid sudden changes. constant link development is important since your competition is likely also getting more links every week.

as for your drop in rankings i would not wait to take action. i would start working now.

a) build out new pages of quality content. embed some relevant links within the content. this will help to boost the internal link count to your key pages and also get you new long tail keyword traffic.

b) offer free content to external websites. embed links within that content.

c) exchange links with related companies. if you sell widgets then contact a widget repair website.

d) exchange links with "competition". if you repair cars in new york then contact a car repair website for california. neither of you are a threat to each other since your geographic area is limited.

member22, Are they sitewide links to your home page?

I think you've missed your own admission there. The backlink anchor text profile is not the only thing that changed. You changed your title. That causes ranking changes also.
