I have a site that's been around a long time and ranks well in English.

I want to do Spanish language content.

If I use es.example.com would the new es subdomain be likely to be subject to the sandbox effect?

Or should I use www.example.com/es ?

Or is this question irrelevant as their is no sandbox effect?

What people used to call the "sandbox" was really a delay while Google sorted out various trust factors. That certainly still happens but it's a lot faster today. But it was never a set time-out for new domains.

On your question about using a subdomain versus a directory, you might find value in this current thread discussing the topic: Does main domain get PR from subdomains [webmasterworld.com]
