Google is very clear that they do not like paid links. So let's talk about the gray area of gaining links by giving presents.

This holiday season many companies send holiday gifts to their clients. Google used to even give alot of presents to Adwords & Adsense partners. Why not send a holiday gift to websites with link juice?

Thank a website for linking to you with a box of chocolates. It might help to expand current relationships and open doors with new websites. In the past I have given $40 bottles of champagne and gained links and favors that would have cost me hundreds in cash.

What do you think?

That is why googles stance on paid links is so silly. There is so many ways to buy links without money exchanging hands. I find it is easy to offer something valuable in return to websites who I would like a link from and it works much better than links ever did. They look natural, the websites are high quality and best of all they are usually permanent. Not to mention it establishes new business relationships and gives me referrals.

Google doesn't seem to give two hoots to the niche I operate in! I don't sell links but my competition does. I don't think they'll ever do anything about it.
