I am building a service that tracks KW rankings. Most are long tail.
In working with one music instrument site I keep getting overflows on the KW. After investigating, I fine that some (not many) people type in 150 characters or more. I can assume they are trying to get a better match. I don't know if its related to the Goggle problems or that they tend to type long search phrases because they have the typing skills or because of their higher education training.
Many from this site are 5 or more words.
It shows me how important Long Tail is.

Google does suggest long tail keywords phrase(5 or more words) in google instant.

It could be that after typing in a few characters or words, google suggests them the long tail phrase and they choose it as they find it more relevant. You could test it yourselves.

I should add that this most often happens when people use some generic words first and then use the actual keywords.

For example, if they start with say "where to buy" and then use the keyword or key phrase.

indyank is correct. there are also some other reasons why people are typing in long search phrases. just remember when you are talking about billions and billions of searches you should expect that there will be millions and millions of long tail searches.
