Images and review numbers in normal SERPS

In the standard Google serps, some of the entries have small pictures to the left of the listing, some also have the number of reviews and other information. How do those sites manage to get the pictures and stuff in the serps?

An example is entering "soup recipes" into Google. The BBC site at number 1 has a pic to the left of the serps and "60 reviews" in light grey.

Any ideas appreciated.

Wow, my life must have been somewhere else when that link was posted! Thanks very much for the link.

When I look at various serps, my personal view is that if you appear above the fold and have a good pic shown by Google then a number four position could well outperform a number 1 position just because of the small pic.

I'm off to update a couple of my pages to see if my sites are one of the chosen ones.
