The german homepage of Google shows an animated doodle logo and the press says: "something is about to be announced, but google does not say what just yet":
Dunno. Here in the States, we just have a bunch of colored balls that bounce around then form the Google logo. Mouse over, and they bounce around again.
I'm thinking they are about to rename themselves as Skynet...

The english version doesn't have any hints about it becoming self aware from what I can see and the logo is just the usual.
There are some links to commentary on SearchEngineLand and SERoundtable. No, they don't know what the big announcement is either, but they have some pretty well-informed guesses.
