Same Site Duplicate Content Issues from Short Snippets?

Large site with lots of 1-2 sentence snippets pulled from pages with full content. They're used pretty heavily through out the site everywhere from homepage, categories, topics, sources, popular, related content from other pages, etc. In addition to the pages where content is being pulled from, many of these other pages should rank as well for category specific keywords, topic keywords.

How much of a potential problem is this causing and what is the best solution?

Hello slasher20, and welcome to the forums.

The main risk I think you are running is having Google rank a page that is more poorly targeted - the "one click away" syndrome. This happens especially when the URL with the higher real PageRank is the one with the snippet instead of the one with the full content.

Also, if there end up being many pages with little content except for those snippets (stub pages, in other words) you might trip an "auto-generated spam" filter.

Since you're already doing this, are you seeing evidence of either of those two issues?

Mostly no. There are a few instances where 5-10 pages that has a snippet shows up when I do a query for that block of text, and the main page where the snippet is being pulled from is not even in the index. This is rare but they're pretty obvious pages that should be in the index. They have inbound links and internally linked from several top pages on the site.
