This is not sitelinks but the actual displayed URL. ie www.cheap-widgets.com › ... › Blue - pink widgets

The "blue" links to a page and the "pink widgets" links to a page. How is this done and is there any SEO value doing it?

This is something Google has been doing for about ten months - see this thread for more: Breadcrumb navigation included in results [webmasterworld.com].

Google has a complex algorithm that determines whether they will display those breadcrumbs in the snippet for any site or not, but just last Friday they announced a breadcrumbs mark-up format that sites can use to give themselves the best chance at breadcrumbs in their snippet. See this thread [webmasterworld.com] for more information.
