Do they still pass pr?
Or if they point to nonexistent pages they are useless?

Yes, if the URL in the backlink is 404, then there's no where for PageRank to flow to. PageRank is calculated for a page, not a domain.

But you could 301 redirect the dead URL to a relevant one. That would help.
