After 12 years on the net, my site is now out of the top 10 listing for its main keyword. 3 sites which have been buying links and getting bogus blog posts have pushed me out.

Besides the fruitless "paid link spam report" and getting involved with the same type of spamming, what else can one do?

There are lots of good ways to pursue your own honest backlinks. What kinds of promotion are you doing to get your site more known and loved in present time?

We are in an industry which is not very exciting, getting folks to link to a site on 'ball bearings" honestly can be very difficult. We do sponsor contests, certain Open source projects and getting involved with social media. We keep looking to develop unique content but the prospects of inbound links to it is not always promising.

We do have a blog and spend a lot of free giveaways, tutorials and orginal articles which get lots of links in. However, it does not seem like the power gained by the blog is transfering any to the main site even thou they link up well.
