targeting "key key keyword", domain is keykeykeyword.com, offering a state specific product information and setting up the site structure with folders for each state: keykeykeyword.com/statename-key-key-keyword OR keykeykeyword.com/statename.

thinking of ranking for "key key keyword", would adding the keyword to the state level folder names be a redundant waste of time OR a good idea?

It's hard to know whether repeating the keyword would help or hurt. Even if repeating it helps now, Google's algorithm could change at any time.Repeating it could also risk triggering an over-optimiztion penalty.

My motto is when in doubt, go with the shorter version.

In my view, "keyword in filepath" is a very low level relevance signal and not at all worth stuffing in that fashion. This is especially true since you're planning a site-wide URL schema.
