I've noticed that with certain keywords, "Also try" appears on the right-hand side if there are hardly any [or no] adverts showing.

It is similar to the "Searches related to..." option at the bottom of the SERPS but in a vertical format.

Is this new ?

I haven't seen this yet.

There is a recent discussion here on an enhancement of Google's "Similar" feature, with the top four related: pages showing up in the footer of the SERPs. It seems that Google is trying to get as many relevant search suggestions as it can onto the page....

It's not new, but it is pretty rare to see it - it was mentioned here once a few months ago with little fanfare and I can't even find the discussion now.

I'd say it's sort of like "related searches" but it always points you to queries that have more ads ;)

LOL.

It's a perfect setup, because after you click an "Also try" link, your cursor is right there to click on an ad when it comes up. I don't want to lead to a bunch of posts that will skew results, but if you want to see an example of this, search for [bad ads], which came up with these suggestions...

Also try
bad advertisements
bad advertising
bad print ads
worst ads
examples bad ads

No further ads are shown for any of these searches, though, because the phrases aren't exactly attractive to advertisers. ;)

I stand corrected.

Also I found the earlier discussion: [webmasterworld.com...]

Actually, it wasn't meant to be a correction... just what happened when I came upon a set of phrases that would scare off advertisers. ;)

The earlier discussion is interesting in describing this as a test of "relevance scores." Undoubtedly, Google's refinements and suggestions are used to calibrate Google's results as much as they are used to help users refine their queries.

Probably in this case also a test of "what to do with all that empty space?"
