How Does Google Account For The Social Media Footprint?

No follow to one side, I wanted to get some general thoughts about how Google handles the whole social media portion of the ranking equation? Just so we are clear I've posted the wiki link.
My most general thought is that a good social media program naturally generates other links from the marketplace that do count toward ranking. But that's probably not what you had in mind.
Other than that, the interwebs are full of guesses about this and there's very little that's tested and proven. If an influencer (lots of followers) Tweets about you, that might show up - for a short time - on a query that has QDF.
I personally think that a social presence has a lot to do with Google's idea of a "brand" - both in last year's Vince Update [webmasterworld.com] and in this year's Mayday [webmasterworld.com].
