Is the effort required to get regional TLD's to rank in global SERP's more difficult than using a .com domain ?
What I'm seeing seems to be , but i just wondered what the thoughts were amongst webmasters.

In my opinion, yes. It's much more difficult to rank a ccTLD on google.com.

It can be done technically but you need source of back links from US or dot com websites.

More difficult? In my opinion yes but it can also be equally difficult to get a .com to rank in the regional SERPs if there are good, relevant local sites on their local ccTLD.

From my experience:
1) ranking ccTLD on google.com - in my experience, harder than .com TLD 2) ranking ccTLD on google regional where region is different to ccTLD - even harder
Someone tried to pursuade me a while ago to register a whole bunch of .info sites , but i declined because i thought the effort wasn't worth it. Actually i had no idea. I wonder if that was a wise or false assumption.

All gTLDs start out on a common footing on Google. There is no pre-applied negative factor for being a .info or .biz. This also holds for a few ccTLDs which Google treats as gTLD, such as .tv, .fm and so on.
From launch on, it's still sink or swim on your own merits - and there is such a thing as market perception. I'd say it's probably harder to get strong links for a .biz than it is for a .com right now.
