Bad rankings for inner pages - except when using allinanchor:

I have a website that's about half a year old that is trying to rank for some easy 3 words long keywords. My homepage has one of these keywords and ranks #1. However my inner-pages rank at #31, #76, #162 and #404 for their keywords.

When I look these keywords up in Google using allinanchor: they show up in the top 10. I have promoted my website using network sites and article submission services. Plenty of these links are also indexed. Yet yahoo site explorer doesn't find most of my links to my inner pages.

Also I mostly used the same anchor text with the exception of adding an extra word to it here and there. Even though the pages get more backlinks they do not improve in rankings. I'm thinking about getting more links without my anchor text, but I'm not convinced that's the problem.

Another one of my websites has been promoted in virtually the same way, yet is ranking properly in the top 10.

I hope someone can tell me what's going on,

Thanks in advance

with so many variables (content, links, anchor text, age of domain, competition, etc), it's often difficult to know the specific reason why a page doesn't rank well. Usually all you can do is just keep applying the usual SEO methods. I suggest that you follow up on your own idea of using different anchor text in new links. Another suggestion would be to add more content to the pages, especially original unique content.
