My site and Wikipedia - like attached

I have a site that has been on the first page for quite a while. Dropping to second from time to time, but being around #9 for the most of the time.

Recently I did some on- and off-page work (getting my feet wet in SEO) and started seeing it going up. Today the site is at the best position so far, #3.

Anyway, what I found interesting is that for the last few weeks, all jumps and falls on the first page were done together with Wikipedia page which has always been above my site.

If my site was at #7, Wikipedia was at #6. If it's on #3, W is on #2, and so on.

I know it may be pure coincidence, but found it interesting enough for sharing here.

Thanks

Maybe google is rotating another "block" of sites (such as two Youtubes) in and out of the #4 and # 5 positions. I've seen this many times.

That's a very interesting observation - joined at the hip with Wikipedia! If many others are seeing something similar, we may have a little window into the current ranking technology. I'm keeping an eye out.

As aristotle said, it does suggest the possibility of ranking a "block", rather than ranking a single URL. Are there any other URLs near yours in the SERP that also seem to be attached like this?

Some of the other URLs would move as "singles".

Anyway, today my site and Wikipedia have switched their places with my site being above the big W.
That shattered the "brotherhood". I didn't mind. ;)
