.com crosslinking to .net - should be fine, right?

We have a big ecommerce site on a .com that sells blue widgets

We are releasing a social media site that lets people show off their blue widgets and meet others who have blue widget interests.

We want to put the new site on a .net and cross link the two, instead of putting it as a subdomain of the .com

Since they are completely different, Google isn't going to do anything funky with us cross linking right?

Yep, should be fine. The cross-linking will only be a minimal help in ranking the new domain - it will still need good backlinks from elsewhere. But you're not courting a penalty if you cross-link to help your visitors.
