Folder Naming Penalties for Specific Keywords... Do they exist?

I am trying to determine if Google dampens the results of or penalizes folders based on the folders name.

For example, if a page's URL is
www.website.com/advertisements/ or
www.website.com/promotions/

Does any page that lives under these folders suffer because there is a keyword that google detects as spammy?

short answer: no

longer answer:
the only time i have speculated that that might be the case is when you have a /links/ section. However, it seems that the section did well or poorly based on the content and not on the URLs. Running some tests showed the same results.
