Ranking Order on a site: Operator Search

When searching google using "site:" and no keywords, how does google decide what ranks or is most relevant? The homepage of my site actually comes up in 4th place, and an article about Matt Cutts comes up first.

The Matt Cutts article doesn't have any strong links pointing to it, so I don't see why it would rank first. I don't know if this is some kind of subtle hint or subliminal message?

More than anything else, I just find it odd, as if it isn't accidental. How would you feel if you were in this situation?

And by the way, I have read my article a few times. Maybe someone at google liked my article. I liked it, and I like Matt, so that is why I wrote about him. :) (but just feels a little strange now)

(I do live just down the street from Google and know how to dance (ballroom that is), so would love an invite to this year's dance.) :)

This question comes up from time to time. Most past threads seem to agree - there doesn't seem to be anything dependable about the full ranking order of a site: operator search. However, not seeing your domain root in the first spot is often a sign of either technical confusion or wobbly trust.
