'Widgets for sale' is out, 'Wigets sale' is in - stop word changes

I've performed searches in the past and checked Google's cache of my pages, actually I'm doing that a lot lately to get a clue. In looking at one popular keyword phrase that used to bring me quite a bit of traffic, for which I no longer rank since the Mayday update, I noticed Google cache no longer highlights the full phrase.

Before: widgets for sale was highlighted.
After: widgets and sale are highlighted in different colors, for is ignored.

I don't have any instances of using the words widget sale without the "for" between them, could this combined with the change be why I lost all credit for the keyword phrase?

It's also possible this isn't new, I'm going from memory and am tired.

I'm sure I've been seeing different color codes for each keyword on the cached page for quite a long time, Sarge. Or have I misunderstood you?

The color codes aren't new, the missing colors on the stop words in the middle of a keyword phrase and not ranking for the shortened phrase seems to be. I may be wrong.

widgets sale = good
widgets for sale = not credited for the widgets sale keyword phrase
widgets sale > widgets for sale in the eyes of Google and ranking accordingly ?

Now I understand you - but I'd be very cautious about assuming that cache highlighting has anything to do with the ranking algorithm. Just as with bold words on the SERPs, I think it's a last minute layer that's just added on for display purposes.

However, it is interesting to see no highlighting for stop words.Think I'll chew on that for a while.
