Indented Listings show same content, different urls

Kind of curious as I don't think I've seen this before. The industry I follow shows the top website listed #1 and #2 for the same keyword phrase. The urls are
www.example.com www.example.com/home
Content is identical.

It's one of those classic canonical url [webmasterworld.com] problems. Google tries to catch them and combine them into one record, but I often see evidence like this that they don't get it right all the time.
