Does social marketing impact Google's organic rankings?

We are about to launch a social marketing campaign in all the major platforms - twitter, facebook, etc.

What I wanted to know is whether the above would have any impact on organic search rankings and if there are any best practices to follow in this regard?

I know this question may be vague, but any input is appreciated and I would be happy to expand if given the right direction!

When a business uses social media effectively, the ranking impact is a real but indirect or secondary effect. More people talking about you and with you means a better chance that more people will actually link to your pages.

Some are speculating that Google has a second algorithm that uses some kind of social mention weighting, and that they apply this algo only in some verticals -- especially where they feel fresh results are important. But this idea is still speculation. No one has either confirmed it at Google or published any independent data on the subject.
