Redirecting iPhones to mobile domain

A client is redirecting all traffic coming from iphone users to its .mobi domain homepage.

So, if an Iphone user searches for "cool blue widgets", he'll find the regular domain in the serps, and clicking on it will have him redirected to the mobie homepage, which doesn't have the equivalent content (cool blue widget).

The .mobi site doesn't have the same content at all, it's just a "mini" version of the site with some search capabilities.

What kind of SEO problems do you see in this setup considering the client doesn't care if the .mobi gets ranked or not?
Could it damage the main site?

why redirect the user, why not just serve different CSS to iPhone users on the same domain?
