Does Google more easily favour specific page positions for internal kw linking and heirarchal relevancy strengthening ?
I used to think that the left side or breadcrumb area was strongest , especially when combined with navigation.

Within the content area of the page - that's what gets the most clout, IMO. It works best for external or internal linking.
