I was just now going through some ranking analysis - and I have found something decidedly odd. There is a page that keeps outranking me and holds position 1 or 2 for a bunch of keywords.

I enter the URL from google example.com/category/product.htm

This redirects to mexico.example.com/var/en/rdm//WB/

if I kick the subdomain and enter the redirected-to URL again (i.e. example.com/var/en/rdm//WB/) I end up on another subdomain --> istanbul.example.com/var/en/rdm//WB/

if I enter the root domain only I get yet another subdomain ---> stockholm.example.com

everything on the page - and I mean every single link is nofollow.

I simply can't reach the root domain (or any URLs in G' to the root domain) from my browser.

just about the only file i can get to on the root domain is the robots.txt - which is an autogenerated file.

The domain has over 50,000 pages in the index... but none of the subdomains, which are seemingly auto-generated are found in the index.

BLs for the domain are:

Linking domains: 38
Total links: 387

Any thoughts?

It sounds like some kind of spammer trick that uses wild card hostnames. The full details of what they're doing could be hard to dissect, and if you try, be very careful of malware downloads!
