hey,
for a specific search result on google i see (using yahoo site links) that the first result is from a big well known and well branded website, but the actual page for that specific result has only inlinks (100-200) from that specific website ..
my question is how difficult should it be to get the first position on google instead of that website?
i started experimenting on that but i'm curious to know how much impact does google give to a web page while it only has inlinks, even though some of those inlinks rank high and have a high PR/relevancy ..

A lot of the answer is bound up with just how much actual link juice the "big brand" site is channeling to that page through those internal links. 100 to 200 internal links is a lot -- IF that includes a significant number of content area links from other well-backlinked pages. But it's not so much if the internal links are coming from low juice pages, or the links are in an obscure area of the page where they appear.

I'd say competing is worth a try. A few direct and very "clean" backlinks can do wonders for the ranking of any page, even on a website of relatively low prominence. Internal linking alone does not seem to be as strong a factor as it used to be, but it is still pretty strong.
