Google Webmaster Tools Verification Crippled?

Well, i have my site added into webmaster tools for over 2 years. 2 days ago i submitted a reconsideration request through Google webmaster tool, they recieved the request, which was confirmed by their short message which they displayed in my "Message Box" in webmaster tools section.

Next day when i logged in to check the progress, i was astonished to see that my site was not verified, which is kinda strange as i have added my site maps tons of times and all that, anyways i clicked on verification button and it lead me to another page which contained a link to an html file which i was supposed to have on my root domain, i opened the url in my browser and i had that two years old .html file which google had asked me to upload to my server for verification purpose, since the file was already on the server, i just clicked on verify now and it verified it. All my old messages including my Reconsideration Request Message showed up again.

I just want to know why did this happen and if it was triggered by Reconsideration Request which i had submitted?

I have no experience of reconsideration request however, have only seen the phenomenon of WMT asking for re-verifying the sites (at times) when you have uploaded a HTML file, while have never seen the issue if the verification is done through the Meta tag.

I have seen it with the meta tag too; sometimes fixed by getting a new meta tag, sometimes by switching to html file. Sometimes there just seems to be a bug and Google forgets that the site has been verified.

I don't think it's a bug, at least not most of the time. I think it's a kind of diligence about security that could be triggered in various ways - including, I suspect, new computers accessing the WMT account with an existing email/password combination.

I've had issues with WMT sometimes randomly saying that either a sitemap couldnt be loaded and/or that the site is not verified.

I use the meta tag for verification since I was having issues with the file on the root.

I've had it happen more than once -- always seems to get straightened out though after doing the verification thing. What makes this a little more complicated is the fact that you're dealing with a reconsideration request -- that was not an issue whenever I had to re-verify, so I can see why you are wondering about it. After doing the meta and/or html file, if it's not cleared up in a few days, you may want to contact G-support again, just to be on the safe side.

I have had this happen to me with my analytics account as well, one day i logged in and all my data was gone and i had to re add and verify my site.

Reno: Yes, that makes me wonder, even though i had recieved a confirmation message, yet i am unsure if they have actually recieved my request. I shall just wait few more days and see if they send me a message which they send after going through the request, if they don't then it probaly means my request is lost somewhere and need a resubmission!
