Hey guys,

I have a 301 redirect setup which works fine in the browser. But Google isn't detecting it. It's now been 4 months and still not acknowledged it.

I am trying to redirect from www.subdomain.example.net to www.example.net/folder

As I say it works fine in the browser but Google hasn't picked it up. Now when I search that particular domain, it simply shows only the domain and a message saying "translate this site".

www.example.com works fine and we received over 30,000 visits from google per day, to this particular domain. 301's all work fine, other than this one from the subdomain.

The headers read like this:

GET www.subdomain.example.net
http://www.subdomain.example.net/
301 Moved Permanently
subdomain.example.net

DateWed, 03 Feb 2010 20:08:50 GMT
ServerLiteSpeed
ConnectionKeep-Alive
Keep-Alivetimeout=5, max=100
Locationhttp://www.example.com/folder/
Content-Typetext/html
Content-Length413

I can't see anything wrong with the 301, but this subdomain, which received quite a bit of traffic, is now totally dead.

Any ideas would be much appreciated.

Thanks

[edit reason] switch to example.net - it can never be owned [/edit]

They don't treat 301s from a domain root to a directory on another site the same as they do home page to home page or directory to directory... If the browser redirects and you're not using any user-agent switching for GBot the redirect has been noticed, but it's not handled the same as usual since you are not redirecting to the root of the other site. Yahoo! does the same thing. Not sure about Bing.

In thinking about it you might be better off noindexing the old home page, removing the content, except a polite 'This site has moved: Please Click to Visit' message, then just linking it to the directory on the other site rather than redirecting... IDK It's not something I've tried, so use at your own risk, but it might be better than having the old home page ranking for the term(s) than the new one.
