Very Old Dates next to Google Snippet

On certain supplemental results for my site, Google has dates listed next to each listing. These dates are very old (2005) and each of those pages has been updated since then. I believe these dates are when the pages were originally published.
Has anyone else seen this occur? Any ideas as to why Google shows these dates next to some results but not others?

Some others have mentioned seeing odd dates (and times) next to a snippet - but one that's five years old? That is quite strange, unless that date is on the page itself.

The date was not on the page, and the page has changed somewhat significantly several times per year.
By our best estimates the date coincides with when the pages were originally published, so I'm wondering if anyone else has seen this, or if anyone has any ideas as to why google would be using this date. Thanks in advance.
