hi all,

I purchased a domain for a few grand with a fairly new extension. I am trying to rank on the first page of SERPS for the term Example. This site has been live for a little over a year and has been updated on a weekly basis ever since.

I was wondering roughly how long do you think it may take to reach my goal.

When purchasing the domain I had initially thought within a few months my site would be listed on Googles first page for the term: Example

I am not asking when Ill become a millionaire, or when ill have a successful site. ;) I am just asking based on your knowledge, and personal experience how well do you think my site is performing to reach my initial goal.

The term Example is a “nationality keyword” such as American for example. The results below are from searches based in the US.

So here it goes: Some info and stats on Example.TLD:

Google KeywordToolExternal:

[Example] Match Type= Exact
Advertiser Competition: FULL bar
Local Search Volume: Dec = 70,000
Global Monthly Search Volume: 135,000

Search Results

BING: doing a search on Example

1.I show up on the second page.
2.Total number of search results found ~25 Million

Google: (This is my main concern; I would like to rank 1st page on Google)

1.I don’t show up on the first 10 pages
2.Total number of search results found ~75 Million

Yahoo:

1.I show up on the 7th page
2.Total number of search results found ~ 240 Million

Google Webmaster Tools; Dashboard:

The Keyword Significance for the term Example on my site is Full Bar.
Sitemaps, 4,700 Submitted; Indexed URL’s: 1,196
Links to my site: 280, which 110 are to the front page.

Google Webmasters; Crawl Errors:

Show URLs: HTTP ý(5)ý - In Sitemaps ý(0)ý - Not followed ý(0)ý - Not found ý(2)ý - Restricted by robots.txt ý(72)ý - Timed out ý(0)ý - Unreachable ý(0)ý

Google Webmasters; HTML Suggestions:

Duplicate Title Tags: 26 pages (all pages are the picture albums which have the same title; I do not how to change that; it is a module I am using in Drupal CMS)

If these numbers are sort of similar to your stats or you think you may have a rough idea on how competitive the term Example is and how long it would take to rank well for the term please let me know. I would greatly appreciate your feedback and any suggestions.

That is impossible to answer. I never know how long it is going to take to rank for a term. Just work on getting more links.

The real answer to that question is always "never". If you have to ask that question you probably won't get it.

Putting aside any boost for keywords in the domain, and also any on-page factors, take a good long look at the links coming to the top ten pages (and the sites they are on) for your chosen keyword. Concentrate on the sites/pages with the least links.

Then look at the sites linking to your competitors. Try to ascertain which links are really doing the business for those in the top 10.

How long it will take you to obtain a similar profile = at least how long it will take you to rank.
