Is Google Suggestions a combo of search vol and competing sites?

I kept on wondering what is the results numbers shown in google search drop down.

Then came to a conclusion, its a combination of both most searched terms and the competing sites results for those terms.

I may be wrong, if yes please let me know the correct result numbers for that.

That's a tough one for me to research, because the numbers have long been removed from Google's US suggestions. Given how crazy many numbers are in various kinds of Google reporting.

Here's a discussion from 2008 [webmasterworld.com] that may shed some light. Andy is pretty sure it's the total number of search results for that term.
