Problem submitting sitemap.xml to google

Hello,

This is my first post on this forum and am also new to google webmaster tools.

I have followed the instructions to create a sitemap.xml file containing the URLs of my site and to double check also used a wizard which crawled my site and created a file for me.

I upload it to the httpdocs directory where my index.php file sits and then add the add www.example.com/sitemap.xml in the sitemaps section of the google webmaster tools.

After about a minute it then tells me I have an error:
Sitemap is HTML
Your Sitemap appears to be an HTML page. Please use a supported sitemap format instead.

But it is not an HTML file, it's .XML, even the one created by the online wizard was rejected.

Any ideas to where I am going wrong?

Use an online sitemap generator and test if is working .

Also, you can submit a simple .txt sitemap .

All sorted now, spoke to my web developer and it was an issue with allowing access to the file. Google was trying to access the index file instead and was why it wasn't liking it.
