Okay, so I submitted a second request for reconsideration on a site I took over a month or two ago. The old owner was doing some crazy black hat stuff. Removed all his crap and started back from scratch. Each time I resubmitted the request I received the following message:

We've processed your reconsideration request for http://www.example.com/

We received a request from a site owner to reconsider how we index the following site: http://www.example.com/.
We've now reviewed your site. When we review a site, we check to see if it's in violation of our Webmaster Guidelines. If we don't find any problems, we'll reconsider our indexing of your site. If your site still doesn't appear in our search results, check our Help Center for steps you can take.

What does this mean in layman's terms?

They got your request and someone took a look. They almost never say anything mmore than that - no ruling and no further details. Watch the SERPs for the "real" answer,

Interesting this. A site of mine remains penalized for more than a year now. The first 2 requests made didn't receive any acknowledgment of site review, but the 3rd request made last week, received an acknowledgment of review from Google on 25th, with the same content as posted by Compworld. 4 days on, the penalty still remains.
Wondering why the initial 2 requests didn't receive any acknowledgment and if the last request has any chances of seeing the site through.

I bought a domain that had history which I didn't check before I bought it. It had been released and was availiable when I searched for it. It was penalized because Google will not list it nor index it. Sent reconsideration request and got the same answer. That was six months ago and google still won't index it.

That letter means, don't call us we'll call you now get lost. That's Google's mentality these days.

Bing and Yahoo have picked up my new site and like it.

So, even though I did NOTHING other than buy the domain that had been dead for over a year, Google still has a penalty on it.

Don't hold your breath for Google to do anything.

Nice........

McMohan, the acknowledgement message was not routine until recently.

arizonadude, did you explain that you just purchased this domain to Google? In my experience Google will usually set everything back to zero and give a new domain owner a chance to build afresh - if they have the information at hand. I've had several positive experiences in that way.
