"We've been telling people for a long time that they shouldn't focus on PageRank so much; many site owners seem to think it's the most important metric for them to track, which is simply not true. We removed it because we felt it was silly to tell people not to think about it, but then to show them the data, implying that they should look at it.."
I've been preaching here on WebmasterWorld for years to ignore PageRank when making linking decisions.
How long do you think it will take Google to remove PR from the Google Toolbar?
First, webmasters with no interest in mathematics or knowledge of the PageRank equations go crazy chasing pixels in a bar that don't even use the same equation as the PageRank behind the scenes.
Next, webmasters are told that PageRank isn't at all important and we can all forget about it.
IMO, PageRank is a highly influential factor in Google's algorithm, and remains so despite this type of announcement. The issue is, only Google even know what the current equation is, and have any reliable way of measuring its value.
