Nofollow for outbound links doesn't appear to affect SERPs

I have several sites which, amongst other things, have several listings sections.

Originally, these were just straight links to the listing's site. However, around 6 months back I decided as some of the links were duds and as these people never did anything for me(!) I'd turn them into nofollow links to see what happened.

Well the result of the experiment seems to be no change, hence I'll be changing them back.

Anyone else tried anything like this. Was the result the same?

My guess is that this would have such a minor effect on overall SERPs that it would be difficult to observe amidst the effects of all the other factors.

I should also add that Google changed its treatment of nofollow links so that they can no longer be used for hoarding PR within your own site.
