Can security certificate problems affect rankings?

Hi

A client of mine had occupied the #1 spot for quite a few months with a specific term for his industry - for which he was very happy:-) Last week, we had a spot of trouble with the renewal of the security certificate, this has now been fixed but his #1 ranking has gone down to a #4. Is this coincidental as I'm telling him, or could the problems we experienced last week have been instrumental in his fall down the rankings?

I myself feel the certificate issue had nothing to do with the drop in rankings.

Suggest you/he work on some fresh links with the anchor text.
