I have been debating the potency of two differing setups for a hypothetical company selling, as always, widgets. I would be very interested to have some input on the situation.
Approach #1:
www.widgets-category1.com
www.widgets-category2.com
...
www.widgets-categoryX.com
Approach #2:
www.mywidgetcompany.com/category1
www.mywidgetcompany.com/category2
...
www.mywidgetcompany.com/categoryX
Qualitatively, I am debating the virtues of registering multiple keyword rich domains with related widget content VS a single domain with all widget content.
Approach #1 has the advantage of more related keywords in URLs but then one would have to do SEO on each domain in the group and there is management overhead with the actual setup and site changes.
Approach #2 would have more total links coming in and more content. Of course it would have far more keywords it would need to compete for.
Assuming everything else is equal, i.e. the same set of links will either point to just mywidgetcompany.com or be split across the array of other widgets-categoryX.com domains, and all page content is identical, which approach would give the best results in terms of rankings and traffic?
If you want to become a recognized brand in the marketing (Marketing leader for Widget sort of) then should definitely go with approach #2
Another option can be go with both to tap the maximum benefit, which would also mean a lost of cost and efforts.
