What I mean is, looking back at some of our old content, the content had the main theme key words sprinkled through the wording. I'm sure that nowadays (site's been around for 10 years) Google knows what we do so it should be safe enough for us to stick to good content without skewing it to include the various key words.
Make sense?

If you are unhappy with your rankings for you main keywords I would definitely take a look at what the competition is doing.
However, if you are happy with your main keywords, then try adding more synonyms and related terms. Since you've been around for 10 years keywordstuffing [blue widget] in there another 30 times will probably only earn you an OOP and open a big can of worms.
Although, we did a relaunch of an old page and decided to "help" google identify our content... which worked well.
[webmasterworld.com...] - In my post #:3980731 I link out to the patent as well as discussing my current thinking about it.
I've more than 2,500 old obituaries of people involved with widgets. (some quite lengthy)
For the pass few years google has omitted some the contents in the SERPS.
The general consensus on my previous inquiry was that google considered them a sort of sub-topic of the key content on my highly focused sites (also beginning their 11th year).
Perhaps filling the obits with content rich key words would have added better results to the SERPS, however it was my desire to retain the original words.

For each one write a short keyword rich introduction and summary of what they added to the world of widgets and move the obit down the page. Make it clear in your styling which is the original quoted words. Google loves prominence (certainly in my niche) so keyword rich at the top could work for you. Worth a try?
