Title, links and meta-description seem to go together

Let's say you want to rank on "green widget: you need to have the keyword green widget in the your links as well as in your title, meta description and your webpage (even though most importantly you it seems that it needs to be in the title and a synonym is not enough, it needs to be the exact word )

if you are missing one of those you either won't rank at all or your will rank further in the ranking. Has anyone noticed that too ?

Title and link text - yes.
But the meta description is not a ranking factor on Google at present.
