Just 2 days ago i noticed that Google is showing the domain name as page title in SERP (Google UK) for one of my sites. In place of a optimised page title 'xyz blue widgets' i am getting 'example' showing up as the page title in the SERP where 'example' is my domain. The strange thing is, when i search for the full domain name example.co.uk, the page title changes and shows up as example.co.uk in the SERP!

I have checked up the source code, and the optimised page title is placed correctly in source code.

Have you seen anything like this before?

Yes, I have seen this kind of thing. Google sometimes puts a different title as the clickable link when their studies show that the original title might not be as good as drawing the click for that particular query term.

However, if your existing title is good for the search term involved, then take a cloer look at the source code for validation issues around the <title> element.
