It feels like it's getting harder to get an accurate view of what your real ranking in Google is. For a number of searches I am seeing results that are clearly customized to my location, but I no longer see a link above the SERPs that allows me to view the results without customization.

Without this, how would you recommend finding out what the generic, non-location-specific SERPs look like (or is there even such a thing any more)?

There is a discussion about this issue in the Hot Topics area [webmasterworld.com] - Seeing Country-Located Results - from outside the country [webmasterworld.com].

The discussion ranges further than just country variations. Common approaches include using the Adwords Preview tool, using a proxy server or VPN, and the Google Global add-on for Firefox.
